Conference “Return to Walden, Richard Séguin in the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau.”

Musée Beaulne, 96 rue de l’Union, Coaticook, Québec, Canada, J1A 1Y9

Richard Séguin, a great friend of the Beaulne Museum for over 30 years and a contemplative hiker in the Appalachian Mountains, is graciously offering the community a conference entitled « Return to Walden, Richard Séguin in the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau ».

This conference pays tribute to Henry David Thoreau, a New England philosopher, naturalist and poet whose work « Walden, or Life in the Woods, a reflection on simple living in a natural environment », illuminated his century and inspired ours. Thoreau is also the father of civil disobedience and notably influenced Gandhi and Martin Luther King in their careers.
The author, composer-performer and also visual artist, will present an exhibition of his work « Les silences de la partition » in connection with the conference.
“For me, engraving is the gesture that accompanies words. Just like we write songs, engravings are made of ink, light and time.”
"For this exhibition, « Les silences de la partition », I wanted to echo the songs that carry within them images perceived during musical composition. There are always silences in a musical score, because each note figure corresponds to a figure of silence … silences are an essential part of the score, the same goes for the rhythm in which I am writing.
This is why I make the link between the moments of creation by alternating between the birth of a song and the time I spend in my engraving workshop.
These moments are many silences that are part of my creative process. In my musical creation, my engravings are in some way the silences of the score ".
